Forces revisited

Last term we did some great learning about forces. I just found this fantastic clip and really wish I had known about it last term! I wonder if you will do some reflecting on our term two learning when you watch this?

Forces in the Playground

Today we were Playground Scientists.

We went into the playground to seek forces in action!

We went on the slide, monkey bars, jungle gym, we rolled a ball and discovered all the cool forces we use when we are in the playground.  Forces really are everywhere!

Fraction too much Friction

Today we discovered FRICTION.

Friction is what stops you from slipping.  If there are no lumps and it's all flat it will make you slip because it doesn't have any friction - Bina

Trees are all bumpy.  If they didn't have bumps there would be no friction so when people climbed them  they might have an accident and hurt themselves - Emma

There are two kinds of friction - static friction and motion friction - Grace

Friction can be bumpy - Finn

if we didn't have friction we would just slip and slide everywhere - Lily

We went outside to discover what causes friction in our world.  We discovered the concrete, the deck and lots of other thngs are covered in bumps and dents this causes friction especially when other things with bumps and dents join forces!  Our shoes have lots of bumps and dents in them so when we walk on the bumpy concrete we create FRICTION.

We looked at Bryn's bike.  We noticed there tytpes have lots of bumps on them.  When he rides his bike the bumps on his tyres and the bumps on the concrete join forces and create FRICTION.

This is a movie of the fun from today

The Great Tug of War

When we went outside Mr McKenzie was talking to us about the tug of war.
We had to pull a huge rope against each other.

Our class had a tug of war against Room 15....it was

Fantastic - Ashley
Amazing - Harper
Sensational - Lily
Great - Bina
A miracle - Riley B
Awesome- Fatai
Brilliant- Tiaan
Exciting - Elenoa
Stupendous - Emma
Super Sonic - Riley B
Wow - Nethasa
Cool - Finn

Ignition Day - Forces

Today our whole school had an Ignition Day to launch our Forces topic.

First the whole school went outside and the teachers pulled Heather's truck for ten metres.  Mr McKenzie timed us...it was so much fun.

Later in the day we all had a turn too.

We discovered that PULL is a force.

May the Force be with You

Our new topic is Forces- I like to move it, move it.

I am really excited about this topic.  We will be doing lots of experiments and finding out all about cool ways to make things move...and figuring out how lots of toys and every day objects move.

Maybe over the holidays you could have a look at your favourite toy or things around your house and figure out how they work....I'd love to hear how you get on.

I've added some cool links to the Current Topic Tab at the top of this page to get you started
