Beautiful Bina

On Friday Bina had her first violin lesson. She was so excited when she came back to our class - she had her very own (loan) violin! After lunch Bina showed us what she had learned during her lesson. She even knew the names of the strings! Bina, we think you are amazing.

Friendship Bread Update

Today I added the flour, sugar and milk to our Amish Friendship Bread.

We have remembered to mush the bag each day at school.  On Wednesday we add some more ingredients to the bag and then it will be time to cook it!

Amish Friendship Bread

Today Bina brought in a bag with some ingredients in it.

She also had a piece of paper that had some instructions on it.

She explained to us that this bag had ingredients in it to make a special kind of bread called Amish Bread.

Today is day two - we had to 'mush the bag' today to mix all the ingredients together.  Bina explained there was a chemical reaction happening in the bag and that we will be able to watch the bread grow in the bag!  We are excited about this ... thanks Bina for sharing something so great with us.

Maths Racing

Today we had a maths race to help us learn our basic facts.

Wow, we have some speedy mathematicians in our class!

We had fun racing to know the answer to basic facts.  The boys and girls raced against each other....in the end it was a complete tie.  Riley B, Bina, Nethasa, Bryn, Elenoa and Fatai are particularly speedy- and they can work addition problems out VERY quickly!

St John Ambulance

Today we learned about how to call for help if we have an emergency.

We had a special visitor from St Johns who showed us a mini ambulance, she showed us the oxygen mask and we even felt the oxygen mist.  Cillian, Bina and Tiaan were lucky enough to try on a St Johns Jacket too.  They looked amazing.

We discovered that St Johns Ambulances and Staff all have yellow and green stripes to help us know who they are.

We practiced dialing 111 in case we have an emergency.  We are allowed to practice this on old phones or toy phones but not the real thing!

We also discovered that there is a very cool club called Penguins which is where children who are six years old are allowed to go along and learn about first aid, play games and earn badges.  I have enrolled Amelia in this club for term two....I wonder if any Room 16 children will be keen to join too.

Miss Holmes...our Printing Teacher

Today we tried a new system at handwriting time.

We are learning to take more responsibility for our own learning and for ensuring we are producing our best work.

Today we did our handwriting at reading time.

Bina became our teacher.  Miss Holmes marked the children's books.  She looked to see if the letters were the right size and shape and if they were on the line.  If we managed to do all of this we got a sticker, if we did two things we got a star, the rest of us got a tick.

Bina took her responsibility very seriously and gave excellent feedback to the children.  I also loved the way the class responded to Bina.  They respected her opinion, worked hard to produce their best work and waited patiently for her to see them.

Bina's Magic Treehouse Story

Over the weekend Bina wrote a fantastic Magic Treehouse book all by herself.

Today she read it to our class.  We were very impressed.  Bina took her story to Mrs Warren too.

Well done Bina, we love your motivation.

Home Learning

Today these children shared their butterfly life cycles with our class.

I was so impressed with the effort they made and that they could each explain the life cycle so well....and they each found a great way to present their information.

Carnivourus plants

Today Hayden, Bina, Bryn and Harper read a book about carniviourus plants.

here they are about to teach the class!

They discovered that these plants trap and eat flies.

Hayden said "I learned that some of the plants are sticky and that is how they catch bugs to eat.  I learned some venus fly traps close slowly to trap flies."

Bina said "When the fly lands in the mouth, the plant eats the fly."

Bryn said "I knew about them already.  I like that they are sticky."

Harper said, " venus fly traps are really still so they can hunt their prey."

We looked on You Tube and discovered some great clips, this was one of our favourites.

....the othe caterpillar was missing!

Everyone looked hard and eventually Bina found our missin friend behind the book case!

We returned the caterpillar to the plant bu there are no leaves left!  Hayden's mum is bringing in some pumpkin for the caterpillar to eat tomorrow.

Welcome to 2013

What an amazing first day we had in our class today.

Our Outstanding Wise Learners made me very proud, I am sure there will be some very tired children tonight!

We began our day by welcoming everyone back to school with a special welcome to Finn, Fatai and Elenoa who are new to St Albans School.

We had some fun taking photos of ourselves in a funny photo frame!

Bina was so tired out she even had a wee sleep at school!
